Problem

The objective of this project is to enhance the first-time user flow on a video-chat website to improve user conversions. Currently, a large % drop-off rate of new possible members landing on the website is observed, and a lot of traffic is being sent to the website, but it is not being converted into paying customers. The cause of this issue is attributed to an ineffective ‘first-time’ user flow and insufficient information for the user to drive them to sign up and start spending. The aim is to establish an intuitive and user-friendly first-time user experience, tailored to attract new users, with the goal of motivating them to register and become premium members


User research

User perspective

The live nature of a cam show to many people is highly arousing. Personal and very intimate fantasies (that are not satisfied or may be judged in real life) can be brought vividly to life through this interactive experience. Paying clients actively seek a meaningful connection with the model, which can be fostered through conversations and the sensation of being desired.

Model perspective

Camming can be lucrative but it’s neither easy nor quick. It takes time to build a reliable client base, and the income still relies on their interest and their financial situation. Engaging in captivating interactive activities is essential to attract a larger audience. Communication, appreciation, and understanding of the client are key factors to keep them interested.

Video-chat vs competitors

Cam sites offer a remarkably interactive experience, enabling real-time digital intimacy, whereas watching porn is a passive form of entertainment, and going to a strip club can be too big of an effort. For models, creating and curating quality content on platforms like OnlyFans can be more time-consuming and stressful compared to doing cam shows.

Viewers/ users / clients

The website relies on its models and on its available features to attract users to buy tokens. Incentives are used for viewers to create a profile and get a little taste of what they could get. The interaction between the new user and model (not just viewing them live) helps build a connection that might lead the new user to buy more credits and become a paying client.

The reality is that there are a lot of people that just like to view the model live and do not desire to interact with them by spending money. Some are afraid to be scammed, some don’t think they interacted enough to tip, others are cheap, and others might struggle financially. This is a risk some websites and models take to reach out to a bigger audience.

 Because porn is so available and free people don’t take that seriously video chatting. Strip clubs operate within a social structure that encourages payment. Some models can be online on multiple websites at once, in which one website is free to view the model but on the other one you must pay to watch. It is generally discouraging for a website to feature models who can be found “for free” on other platforms. However, an exception can be made if the model gives more attention and prioritizes clients on the pay-as-you-go website. Interactive tools can help models engage deeper with their audience (spinning wheel, roll the dice, 21 questions, … ). To be more unique, other games can be designed and patented into the platform.

In the end, it’s a collective effort of the roaster of models the website has, from their skills to attract users, to exclusive features, engaging games, and incentives the website brings


Target group

There are different stages a user finds themselves during their interactions with the platform. The target group regarding this project represents people who are familiar to live video-chat websites, watch them casually or regularly and search for other platforms as well.

1. First timer

They represent the people that discover for the first time a video-chat website.

2. Curious

They know about those types of websites and start to visit again. They might not explore beyond this website for a while.

3. Familiar

They may intentionally seek out similar websites or come across them randomly while browsing within the same category.

4. Regular

They frequently watch video-chat websites, they have an account, and spend tokens on models.


Persona

The persona was created based on a larger group but also on specific stages that users find themselves during their interactions with the platform. In this context, the ‘first-time’ users are people that visit frequently or regularly video-chat websites.

ABOUT HAN

Han is a risk data analyst living in a fairly big city. He is single a single straight male that enjoys exploring his sexuality. Despite his tiresome schedule and environment, he is sometimes trying to meet women on dating apps. He doesn’t look for something serious, if it’s meant to happen, it will. Not being in a relationship, Han relies on casual one-night stands and watching sex cam shows. He feels that cam shows feel more real than porn. Han has a few favorite models that he watches regularly on live sex cams 2, 3 times a week. Conclusion

Bundles & subscriptions

Patreon, Netflix, OnlyFans, … are well-known platforms that have accustomed people to the concept of monthly subscriptions and tiered memberships. By subscribing people get access to exclusive content and benefits based on their tiers. The payment model in the video-chat industry may remain unchanged, but there is an opportunity to motivate models by offering them a larger share of earnings when they opt to offer bundles and deals. Bundles, subscriptions, and deals can be used to attract new users, while the current reliable clients will continue to buy tokens. The goal is for the user to get a taste of what they can get and look into the menu for specific fantasies and requests.

Decisions

There are a number of decisions on how the website should work that make it appealing to the viewers. One of the decisions is to have a snapshot of the live show instead of a curated picture of the model. People who watch live video-chat shows enjoy the natural beauty of live models “They look like real people”. A second decision is to let people view free shows, and pay for private shows. This decision attracts more people who can turn into clients in the future.

Bundles

In the 14th century, the French philosopher Jean Buridan described a donkey that, unable to decide between two bales of hay to eat, starves to death. Taking away the decision-making and offering the new users specific rewards will speed up the process of trying the features and hopefully becoming reliable clients.

Each model offers 4 interactions from their menu for free to new users. By designing dedicated buttons for these interactions, the model can easily track user inputs (avoiding confusion with other tokens). Then the model can act/ interact in such a way as to seduce the new user to “keep it going” and make them buy tokens. Additional bundles have been devised, including monthly subscriptions, an additional avenue for attracting new clients.

Model

A successful cam model needs to know how to engage and entertain their audience, seduce viewers, and know how to monetize their performances. The platform also has to provide a transparent environment where the model’s information is easily reachable.

Building a loyal client base takes time, but using the platform’s potential to tease and attract potential clients can greatly speed up this process. Some examples can be having free pictures or videos, showing the menu, or having a 24h “story” like photos, for new users to view.
